SUBIC YACHT CLUB OPENS RECREATION CENTER
Subic Bay Freeport, Feb. 25, 1998 - A P230-million recreation center was recently opened by the Subic Bay Yacht Club, a country club marina at the Subic Bay Freeport.
The recreation center completes the P2-billion yacht club, the flagship project of the Subic Bay Waterfront Development Corporation led by businessman-sportsman Vicvic Villavicencio.
The club is the biggest of its kind in Asia, boasting of a 10,000-square meter main clubhouse, a boathouse, recreation center and a 300-berth marina in almost 29 hectares of pristine, unpolluted land and sea.
The new recreation center offers "glow-in-the-dark" bowling alleys, two US-Open rated covered tennis courts with Deco Turf surface, a 2,500-quare meter swimming pool, an outdoor cafe, video arcade, Internet cafe, day care center, children's outdoor and indoor playgrounds, separate men's and women's gyms and spas and salon facilities.
Villavicencio told newsmen at the opening rites that the current currency situation has caused the recreation and lifestyle market to shift its priorities from expensive and dollar-denominated vacations to one that gives more value for money, such was what Subic delivers.
Tourism income accounts for 25% of Subic's revenues. This figure is expected to increase with the full operation of the new recreation center.
The Subic Bay Yacht Club is fast gaining a name as the prime sailing ground in Asia. Major regattas and sailing competitions usually participated in by international teams have been held at the yacht club for the past two years.
