PILIPINO TRAFFIC SIGNS AT EXPRESSWAYS
Manila, Feb. 20, 1998 - Traffic signs with Filipino translations will be installed very soon at the North Luzon and South Luzon Expressways.
Land Transportation Office traffic safety division chief Dairy Jacobo said the Filipino translations will make motorists understand the signs better.
The signs will adhere to the standards set by the 1968 Vienna Convention on Traffic and Road Signs which sets the distance where signs should be located and how big the letters or drawings should be.
The Expressways will be the pilot sites for Filipino traffic signs, which will later be installed in other places.
Ms. Jacobo explained that the Filipino terms used will not be the "purist" form which may not be understood by the majority of motorists. For example, the sign "Slow Down" will be translated to "Dahan-Dahan Lang" instead of the purist "Marahan lamang ang takbo."
