LA UNION DEVELOPED AS SURFING CENTER
San Juan, La Union, Feb. 17, 1998 - Amateur surfers from around the world have discovered the surf at the coast of Urbiztondo, San Juan, barely seven kilometers from the capital town of San Fernando.
The site was chosen by the Nippon Students Surfing Association for their annual competition. Hundreds of students from various universities across Japan came to participate, concentrating on the surf breaking near the Mona Liza Cottages.
Nearby, a Japanese surfing enthusiast has organized the La Union Surfing Association, composed of young men and women from as far as Metro Manila. Kazuo Akinaga serves as guide and teacher, instructing novices on the intricacies and joys of surfing at the Surf Camp in La Union Surf Resort.
The waters of La Union became the center of attention with the holding of the Philippine National Surfing Championship, sponsored by Quicksilver: Australia, in close coordination with the municipality of San Juan and the Provincial government of La Union.
San Juan is only 277 kilometers from Manila, over good concrete highways. It is accessible by public air conditioned buses operated by Franco Bus Cop, Philippine Rabbit, Farinas, Maria de Leon, Panther and Autobus lines. Thee buses leave Manila every hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Aside from surfing, visitors can also trek to the Cadaclan Botanical Gardens in San Fernando, visit the local pottery factories, grape farms, go deep-sea fishing for tuna and marlin, watch the making of the famous dried fish delights of Damortis and visit the beautiful churches.
