INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN ILOILO SOON
Iloilo City, Feb. 15, 1998 - The Iloilo airport is being transformed into an international facility capable of handling large aircraft and thousands of passengers daily.
Congress had appropriated P24 million for the project in 1997 and an additional P30 million for 1998. Ground-breaking ceremonies for the total rehabilitation of the airport were held last week, with Speaker Jose de Venecia as guest of honor.
Although the national government has identified a site for an international airport that would be operational by the year 2020, Iloilo Congressman Raul Gonzales said the city could not afford to wait that long for an international airport, especially when the present airport could be upgraded to handle bigger aircraft.
"The Iloilo City airport is a major gateway of air traffic which can absorb the influx of socio- economic investments not only in Iloilo but also for the rest of Western Visayas," De Venecia said. "As the country leaps forward into the 21st century, it is imperative to develop existing resources and be global in perspective."
