BAMBOO ORGAN FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ZAPOTE BRIDGE
Las Pinas City, Feb. 13, 1998 - The 23rd Bamboo Organ Festival will celebrate the Battle of Zapote Bridge when it runs from Feb. 19 to March 1 at the Las Pinas Church.
Tradition has it that Father Diego Cera, the parish priest of Las Pinas and builder of the world- famous bamboo organ, was also the designer and builder of the Zapote Bridge which linked Las Pinas to Bacoor, Cavite over the Zapote River.
The bridge survived for 70 years, and the Bamboo Organ Festival will celebrate the bridge, the battle and independence all together.
Several foreign groups will participate in the festival. The Ensemble Clement Janequin, one of France's most recorded vocal ensembles, will perform two programs of Renaissance music, one sacred and one to celebrate the pleasures and pastimes of the epoque.
Two evenings will be devoted to music by Filipino composers, including two scores by Francisco Feliciano and Lucrecia Kasilag, both commissioned by the festival in its 23-year history. Also to be performed is a recent composition by Josefino Toledo on a 16th century Ladino poem.
