FILIPINO-AMERICAN EXHIBIT BY SAN FRANCISCO ARTISTS
Manila, Feb. 9, 1998 - The Museo ng Maynila will launch the Manila opening of the art exhibition entitles San Francisco Babaylan: Sister City Sisters. Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown will cut the ceremonial ribbon and deliver the keynote addresses.
The five-day exhibition will feature contemporary art of 8 San Francisco-based women artists who trace their roots to the Philippines. The exhibit draws its inspiration from Babaylan, which is a pre-colonial Visayan term that translates to "community healer, spiritual leader and high priestess."
Sponsored by the San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee, San Francisco State University, Philippine Women's University and the Museo ng Maynila, the exhibit is part of Mayor Brown's Feb. 1998 Cultural and trade Mission to Manila.
An informal discussion between the local and the Filipino-American artists is also scheduled on Tuesday, Feb. 10, as an opportunity to share ideas and experiences.
The museum is located at the former Army and Navy Club, and is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm. Admission is free.
