MARLBORO CENTENNIAL TOUR 98 STARTS IN APRIL
Manila, Feb. 27, 1998 - The Philippine Centennial Commission and the Philip Morrris Philippines Inc are gearing up to assemble the finest cyclists from the Philippines and the whole of Asia for the planned Marlboro Centennial Tour 98. It is slated to start on April 15, 1998 in Cebu City.
The organizers are bringing in about 90 riders in all. Joining the Philippine team are teams from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea and Japan. Indonesia have been invited too.
What is so special with the race this year is that the cycling route will include focal points from the country's history of its Philippine Independence. There will be races in Cebu City where Lapulapu led the Spanish conquerors then the riders will be flown to Manila where from Luneta, at Dr Jose Rizal's monument, the cyclists race to Cavite passing Gen Emilio Aguinaldo's house, then to Tejeros, the site of the Katipunan Convention and then to Taal where the first Filipino flag was hand created.
The race starts to wind down at the Philippine Centennial Expo at Clark to its final finish back at the Luneta where the winner will be awarded the championship money of P500,000. Final plans are still in the offing.
