PHILIPPINE FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIVED
Manila, Feb. 25, 1998 - The Philippine Football League is launching a 12-team national tournament in an attempt to professionalize football and lure more players to the sport.
Corporate backers and sponsors have signed up and local eliminations have actually started. Two qualifiers each from the National Capital Region and Mindanao and one each from Luzon and the Visayas will advance to the national finals set in Bacolod.
A wild card entry among the non-qualifiers will also advance to the finals.
For the Mindanao Cup from March 2 to April 5, the competing teams are Davao, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.
Vying in the Visayas Cup tournament from March 11 to April 17 are Iloilo, Dumaguete and Cebu.
The Luzon Cup set for April 20 to May 6 will see action from the teams of Laguna, Bicol and Baguio.
Twelve teams from the National Capital Region will vie for the region's championship from Feb. 28 to March 29.
Wild card competitors are the second placers in the Visayas and Luzon Cups and the third placer in the Mindanao Cup.
