RP EYES 8 MEDALS IN MAYOR'S CUP MEET
Bacolod City, Feb. 22, 1998 - World Championships silver medallist Roel Velasco will lead 25 tough boxers in carrying the Philippine colors for the 10th Mayor's Cup International Amateur Boxing Championships, a world ranking and World Cup qualifying tournament scheduled to be held in Bacolod from Feb. 23 to March 2.
Many Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP), said the Philippines will field three teams: Red, White and Blue.
World-class boxers are participating, representing Australia, Canada, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Kazakstan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and Uzbekistan, Mongolia.
The Philippine teams will be missing Atlanta Olympics silver medallist Onyok Velasco, who emerged from a 6-month hibernation physically unprepared for the boxing derby.
"But even without Mansueto, our three teams are formidable," Lopez said. "They are composed of well-trained boxers who have proven themselves in part local and international tournaments."
