NATIONAL DEAF GAMES IN QUEZON
Lucena City, Feb. 22, 1998 - More than 500 deaf athletes forming 24 teams from all over the country are participating in the First Philippine National Deaf Games this weekend at the Quezon National High School in Lucena.
The games are organized by Lingkod Banahaw, a community-based rehabilitation program in the provinces of Quezon and Marinduque. The principal force behind the games is Simon Hart, a deaf volunteer connected with the Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) of England.
Financial and technical support for the games are provided by the VSO Central Project Funds via the European Union. Also supporting the project are the Philippine Sports Association of the Differently-Abled, or Philspada, the Philippine Sports Commission through Chairman Philip Juico and the Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
Teams and individuals who emerge as champions may get the chance to compete in the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taiwan in the year 2000 and the World Deaf Games in Rome in the year 2001.
