MORE WORLD TITLE FIGHTS IN LAS PINAS
Las Pinas City, Feb. 21, 1998 - Las Pinas City Mayor Nene Aguilar has promised to stage more world boxing championships in Las Pinas.
The assurance was given by Mayor Aguilar after World Boxing Organization flyweight champion Melvin Magramo successfully defended his title against Thailand's Pernchai Sitsyapraphon at the Manuela Shopping Mall open parking lot last February 14 before 10,000 fans.
Aguilar, who donated the trophy, declared that the crowd proved how popular boxing is especially if offered free to the viewing public.
"This is the first time that a world title boxing match was held in Las Pinas and we have done our best to make this event a truly entertaining affair for all the people," Aguilar said after the fight.
The championship fight and five other bouts lasted till way past midnight, but the crowd of 10,000 was very orderly and peaceful. The evening was sponsored by Mayor Aguilar, the Las Pinas Youth and Sports Commission and the Elorde Sports Center.
