ALASKA OVER POP COLA, MOBILINE BEATS PUREFOODS
Pasay City, Feb. 10, 1998 - Rookie of the year Andy Seigle powered Mobiline, coming from behind to grab victory, 67-64, shaming defending champion Purefoods in the PBA All-Filipino Cup yesterday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The 24-year-old Filipino-American, who was brought to the Philippines last year by coach Tommy Manotoc, outsmarted the defense of Alvin Patrimonio and sank the game-clinching shot.
"Tonight, our defense is much better. When you build a team, defense is the first option. In basketball, you win games with defense," said coach Tommy Manotoc, who powered the famed Crispa Redmanizers to the PBA grand slam in 1983.
In the main game, Alaska scored its second straight victory, defeating winless Pop Cola 76-70, leading all the way. Alaska hung on for the win despite a rally which cut Alaska's 13-point deficit to just one point.
