PBL SIGNING ACCORD WITH UAAP, NCAA
Manila, Feb. 1, 1998 - The Philippine Basketball League is confident of reaching an agreement with the country's top collegiate leagues on player recruitment and compensation to schools.
PBL Commissioner Joseller Guiao said the ongoing talks with the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) would most likely end with an agreement by next week.
The PBL is seeking to reduce the students' residency rule from three to two years before they are allowed to play in the PBL. In return, the PBL is willing to give the UAAP and the NCAA the same "development compensation" arrangement it has with the PBA.
The proposed compensation scheme will have the PBL giving hefty financial contributions to the schools for every player they would recruit. The money will bee used for the schools' sports development programs.
The three parties have not yet decided on the amount for the "development contribution" but Guiao said the fee may be shouldered evenly by the team owners and the league.
The PBL had signed a similar contract with the PBA early this month.
