Quezon City , Feb. 28, 1998 - The opposition party Laban ng Makabayang Masang Pilipino (LAMMP) clarified that it has not chosen its official mayoralty candidate to face Quezon City Mayor Ismael Mathay in the May elections.
LAMMP Secretary General Rep. Ronaldo Zamora issued the statement amidst conflicting news reports from the camps of actors Herbert Bautista and Rudy Fernandez, both aspiring to be LAMMP candidate for mayor in Quezon City. Herbert is currently Quezon City vice mayor. He was Mathay's running mate in the last mayoralty election in 1995.
Actor Rudy Fernandez, while a neophyte in politics, was named a top favorite of LAMMP officials who expect local candidates to assist in securing victory for the Estrada-Angara tandem.
Herbert Bautista was earlier named LAMMP party chairman for Quezon City, a promotion that led to speculation that Herbert's been "anointed" as official candidate.
