PAL DISCOUNTS UP TO 61%

Manila, Jan. 31, 1998 - In a move to perk up the local travel market, Philippine Airlines (PAL) is offering drastically reduced fares on selected domestic routes beginning next week.

PAL is giving up to 61% discount on published fare rates for certain routes if the tickets are purchased at least four days prior to departure.

Among the routes covered by the discounts are: Manila to Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Cotabato, Iloilo, Davao, Tacloban and Zamboanga. PAL's fare discounts will run from Feb. 1 to March 15, 1998.

Industry sources say the discounts show how keen competition is in the domestic airline industry, with new flag carriers attracting a bigger volume of passengers through lower fares.

PAL carries an average of more than 7.2 million domestic passengers a year, or about 60-70% of the local market.
