SULTAN KUDARAT'S FORT IN BASILAN VERIFIED
Basilan, Jan. 23, 1998 - A historical site in this island province, the Kuta of Sultan Kudarat, promises to be a major tourist attraction after its verification and restoration by the National Centennial Commission (NCC).
The Basilan Chapter of the Philippine Historical Commission has been assigned to coordinate the project.
PHC and NCC officials explained the historical significance of the site. "Sultan Kudarat was the man who unified all Mindanaoans in the fight against the Spaniards. His grave is believed to be in the heart of the province."
A committee has been created for the "immediate and accurate" verification of the historical sites, as well as accounts of the events pertinent to the sites. The Basilan committee is headed by Dr. Luningning Umar, president of the Basilan State College.
Mindanaoans are also busy with the construction of shrines in honor of Muslim heroes, as well as the establishment of a research center specializing in the writing of the history of Muslim Mindanao.
