MAKATI'S CARACOL MARDI GRAS JAN. 25
Makati City, Jan. 23, 1998 - Makati City will reverberate with song and dance on Sunday, January 25, as thousands take to the streets with painted bodies and faces, swaying and twirling to the beat of festive music.
The Caracol, declared an official festival of Makati in 1991, involves all sectors of the community. Public schools, hotels, restaurants, mascots of food chains, socialites from Forbes Park, vendors from the market all participate to make the festival a success.
The word "caracol" comes from the Spanish word for snail. For the festival, it symbolizes the shell that people hide in to escape reality.
During the Caracol Mardi Gras, Makati's revellers will discard this shell and emerge to join in the contagious merrymaking that will envelope the Philippines' premier financial and economic district.
Caracol is sponsored by the Makati City government and the Department of Tourism.
