UNITED AIRLINES DROPS MANILA ROUTE
Manila, Jan. 19, 1998 - United Airlines will suspend passenger flights to Manila beginning next month, in a move aimed to cut costs and increase profitability.
Montie Brewer, vice president of United Airlines for Resources and Planning, said the company had experimented with serving Manila from other cities, including Taipei and Tokyo.
Brewer explained that the airline is faced with intense competition from Philippine Airlines and Northwest Airlines for the market's pool of business customers.
The airline will continue with its freighter-cargo service at least three times a week. United considers the Manila cargo traffic a vital contributor to the success of its international cargo operations.
