HOMESTAY PROGRAM FOR TOURISTS SUCCESSFUL
Manila, Jan. 10,1998 - The National Homestay Program launched by the Department of Tourism in the countryside has been very successful in providing accommodations for tourists in destinations with hotel room shortages or where there are no commercial hotels at all.
Many tourist groups have actually requested to stay with typical Filipino families rather than in hotels or lodges, in order to experience authentic Philippine culture and hospitality.
The homestay sites were chosen according to prevailing situations: tourist-friendly communities ready to accept visitors, with existing natural and man-made attractions, and have the accessibility through existing transportation services.
Home owners were chosen according to their willingness to accept paying visitors. After selection, members of the homestay family undergo a training workshop on the basic needs and expectations of foreign visitors, cultural differences and Filipino historical and cultural aspects that could enrich the visitor's experience.
