RP TOURISM GROWTH HIGHEST IN ASIA

Manila, Jan. 6, 1998 - According to the World Tourism Organization, the Philippines has the highest growth rate in Asia in terms of tourist arrivals. From a mere 1.1 million tourists in 1992, the figure rose to 2.2 million this year.

The WTO noted that much of the credit goes to the new direction in tourism promotion adopted by the Department of Tourism. Among the blockbuster promos were: Islands Philippines in 1992, Bring Home A Friend in 1993, Jeepney Adventure in 1995, Convention City Manila '95, and Best of the Islands Philippines in 1996.

Last year, as the country prepared to celebrate the centennial of its independence, the tourism promotions go hand in hand with Philippine history, such as the Pandanan Wreck Exhibit, the Pre-Hispanic Gold Collection, the tranvia tours of Intramuros and Nayong Pilipino and the Heroes museum at the Palace in the Sky in Tagaytay.
