AFFECTED BY CRISIS
Manila, Jan. 23, 1998 -
The economic crisis raging all over Asia has reduced the number of foreign
teams in the first Asian University Basketball Championship.
The Basketball Association of the Philippines announced yesterday that only Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Macau are sending teams to the sports meet. The three will join Manuel L. Quezon University, Southwestern U and University of Manila in the competition set to start Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The tournament was supposed to have seven foreign teams, but the following withdrew: Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Jordan. The trips of the students' teams were cancelled due tot he currency collapse affecting many countries in Asia.
