PBA RETURNS MINIMUM AGE
RULE
Manila, Jan. 22, 1998
- The Philippine Basketball Association has restored the age requirement
of players who wish to join the 1999 draft.
PBA Commissioner Jun Bernardino said the lowering of the age limits is now a thing of the past. "We agreed that 23 is the right age for a player to choose his career path," he explained.
The age proviso is just one of the important parts of the nine-point Memorandum of Agreement the PBA signed jointly with the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) following discussions at the Hyatt Regency Hotel yesterday.
The agreement takes full effect this year and will have the PBA compensating the PBL by way of a development fee for every player picked to join the professional ranks. The fees will go into the PBL coffers and not to any specific team.
The PBL is to receive P120,000 for a player recruited in the first round starting in the 1998 drafting. Those picked after the first round will cost the PBA P50,000.
