PBA SATELLITE TRANSMISSIONS
ILLEGAL?
Manila, Jan 19, 1998 -
The Domestic Satellite Philippines Inc. (DOMSAT) is asking the National
Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to stop what it claims are illegal
transmissions of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games nationwide
via satellite.
Rodrigo Silverio, DOMSAT president, told the NTC that Vintage and IBC-13 have been broadcasting PBA games from Manila to the rest of the country through the satellite facilities of Transpacific Broadcast Group International (TBGI) which, though based in Clark, has no broadcast license or authority from the NTC.
The NTC claims that the PBA coverages are picked up by TBGI during the live broadcasts, uplinked through TBGI facilities to a satellite, and downlinked to IBC-13 stations nationwide for re-broadcast to provincial viewers.
Silverio cited several specific instances when DOMSAT's facilities monitored the alleged illegal satellite transmissions.
