TANDUAY IS PBL CHAMP!
Makati City, Jan. 19, 1998 -
Tanduay Rhum dethroned Agfa Films with an 82-76 victory to capture the
Philippine Basketball League All-Filipino Conference crown before a packed
crowd at the Makati Coliseum last night.
The Rhum Makers, five-time PBL title-holders since joining the PBL in 1995, caught up from behind in the last minutes of the game to grab the crown.
With still 8:42 left in the final quarter, Agfa was ahead 60-53 but Randy Alcantara and Eric Menk scored successively to catch up and levelled the count at 66-all with 4:11 left.
Telan converted a 22-foot jumper to advance the game 69-68, Cantojos followed up with two free throws to make it 71-68. And it was Tanduay's game in the last minutes.
It was a fitting victory as Tanduay coach Alfrancis Chua celebrated his birthday yesterday, amidst balloons and confetti and the yelling of grateful fans.
