CYCLISTS IN NATIONWIDE MARLBORO
TOUR ELIMS
Manila, Jan. 18, 1998
- The Professional Cycling Association of the Philippines has started eliminations
for the Philippines' biggest summer sports spectacle -- the 1998 Marlboro
Tour International, which will reel off in April.
Initial eliminations last month picked 52 bikers from Region 1 and Region 4 out of 130 last month. The same 52 went through time trial and road race eliminations last weekend and only 35 passed.
Ryan "Ben" Tangguili, 19-year-old former alternate on the Nueva Ecija squad, topped the first time trial/road race eliminations. He will join Carlo Guieb in the Nueva Vizcaya team.
The two regional teams will submit their complete line-ups to the PCAP by February.
Other eliminations rounds scheduled are: Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija today and tomorrow, and National Capital Region and Central Luzon on January 24-25. The Davao and Visayas teams will hold final eliminations on Feb 7-8.
All eliminations are being held at Jala-Jala and Antipolo to determine the seven members of each team to the Marlboro Tour, which opened its doors to international cyclists last year. The regional teams can also choose two alternate members each.
