PENALOSA DEFENDS WBC CROWN IN MARCH
Quezon City, Jan. 12, 1998 - It is now official: World Boxing Council super-flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa will defend his title against Mexican Joel Luna Zarate on March 21 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Promoter Zander Kahn received the contract bearing the signatures of the 31-year-old Zarate and his Los Angeles-based manager Ricardo Maldonado, which specifies $40,000 prize money for the challenger.
The March encounter will earn for Penalosa a $150,000 purse.
The 25-year-old Filipino boxer has fought 37 matches and won 35, lost one and drew one. Zarate, on the other hand, has a 31-2-1 record with 24 knockouts since 1988.
