FVR ASKS SPORTS COMMUNITY TO UNITE
Manila, Jan. 1, 1998 - President Ramos called on the Philippine sports community to unite and get their act together, saying that his oft-repeated pleas had fallen on deaf ears.
In a speech before Philippine sports writers, the President rued the "intrigue and discord" that have stood in the way of unity in the Philippine sports community.
This, he said, could be the main reason why the Philippines slid from third place overall in the Southeast Asian Games to fourth, surrendering the third spot to the Malaysians.
The President also pointed out that while the country has excelled in other endeavors like manufacturing, exports and other sectors, the sports sector has barely made any advances.
"Look up to the future, unite. Teamwork is what's keeping our heads above the water in these trying times with Asian currencies and economies under massive attack," he said.
