Basilan Province, Jan. 23, 1998 - The National Centennial Commission (NCC) is currently authenticating what is supposed to be the grave of hero Lapu-Lapu, the sultan of Mactan.
NCC officials believe that Lapu-Lapu died on an islet in Basilan. Lapu-Lapu and his tribe engaged Magellan and the Spaniards in a battle over four centuries ago on Mactan island. Magellan died in that battle from a poisoned arrow.
The Basilan chapter of the Philippine Centennial Commission has been directed to verify the authenticity of the burial site.
A committee has been created for the immediate and accurate verification of the historical sites, as well as accounts on these places. Dr. Luningning Umar, president of the Basilan State College, has been named head of the committee.
