Paranaque, Jan. 20, 1998 - Drinking alcoholic beverages in front of sari-sari stores, along streets and alleys, outdoors in front of homes can land celebrants in a Paranaque jail.
Mayor Joey Marquez, who earlier imposed a curfew on minors, is banning street drinking as a preventive measure against sex-related crimes. Marquez said suspects in rape cases are usually drunk or are under the influence of drugs at the time they commit the crime.
The ban does not cover licensed night clubs and beer gardens with permits. It would apply in depressed areas where many sari-sari stores and makeshift stalls sell beer and gin for consumption in public places.
Marquez admitted that a municipal ban already exists banning drinking in public places. His order will make the public aware of the stricter implementation of the existing ordinance.
