Manila, Jan. 17, 1998 - The red tide organism has affected seven provinces and 12 towns from Luzon to Mindanao, prompting the national government to order governors, and mayors to ban the gathering, selling and transporting of shellfish in their areas.
The Inter-Agency Committee on Environmental Health said the ban covers the costal waters of Navotas, Masinloc in Zambales, Juag Lagoon in Sorsogon, Balite and Pujada Bays in Davao Oriental, Dumanguillas, Sibuguey and Ilana Bays in Zamboanga del Sur and Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur.
The IACEH -- with members from the departments of health, environment and natural resources, science and technology, interior and local government and agriculture and fisheries -- continuously monitors the red tide situation all over the country to protect the citizenry from food poisoning.
