Pasay City, Jan. 16, 1998 - Acting Pasay City Mayor Wenceslao "Peewee" Trinidad took his oath of office as Pasay City Mayor yesterday after former Senator Aquilino Pimentel, author of the Local Government Code, said Mayor Pablo Cuneta should relinquish his post for medical reasons.
Mayor Trinidad's oath-taking is in defiance of the opinion of Local Government Secretary Robert Barbers that 87-year-old Mayor Cuneta could legally re-assume his post despite his condition.
Trinidad accused Mrs. Elaine Cuneta, of having personal and political reasons for forcibly taking her sick husband to the Pasay City Hall to "illegally" occupy the mayor's office.
"The Cuneta family is trying to protect its members who are responsible for more than 1,000 ghost employees on the Pasay City budget, whose salaries they collect and continue to bleed the local government's coffers," Trinidad said.
