General Santos City, Jan. 15, 1998 - More than four thousand farmers idled by the drought now receive 8 kilos of rice daily from the city government in exchange for work in their barangays.
Rebecca Magante, city social welfare officer, said the government has embarked on a "rice-for- work" program to give food to 4,740 farmers in 8 drought-stricken barangays.
The severely affected barangays -- Conel, Olimpog, Mabuhay, Upper Labay, Matomelong, San Jose, Tinagacan and Sinawal. -- are beneficiaries of rice purchased from the National Food Authority.
The General Santos City government has earmarked P3.6 million for the project.
