Manila, Jan. 14, 1998 - The Commission on Elections announced yesterday that there will be another plebiscite on the creation of the Cordillera Autonomous Region on March 17.
The holding of a new plebiscite is required under Republic Act 8438 also called the Organic Act for the Cordillera Autonomous Region. The measure was signed into law by President Ramos last December 22.
The plebiscite period will run from Feb. 5 to March 22, or 30 days before and 15 days after the plebiscite day.
Since it will coincide with the synchronized polls, all bans on firearms, appointment of new personnel and disbursement of public funds apply.
The people of five Cordillera provinces had rejected an earlier Cordillera Autonomous Region Act in a plebiscite in 1989.
