Lingayen, Pangasinan, Jan. 13, 1998 - Governor Oscar Orbos has ordered the dredging of more irrigation canals to help Pangasinan farmers cope with the effects of the El Nino phenomenon.
Orbos directed the provincial engineer's office to immediately coordinate with the provincial agriculturist to dig the canals which have been rendered useless due to siltation and long neglect.
Already dredged is a 15-kilometer irrigation canal traversing eight barangays of Urdaneta town, while a 4-kilometer canal in 3 barangays of Sta. Barbara is now being desilted.
Irrigation canals are being dredged to maximize the use of 1,000 shallow-and-deep-well water pumps and water impounding facilities necessary to prevent agricultural crops from drying up.
