Baguio City, Jan. 11, 1998 - Mountain Province Governor Maximo Dalog has proposed that the Cordilleras be used as a major food source to feed substantial areas in the lowlands during the drought caused by the El Nino phenomenon.
"We have a surplus of vegetables which we re willing to share with our less fortunate countrymen," Dalog said.
"El Nino's drought has not affected our farms which are within the rainbelt of the Cordilleras, and we're continuing to produce more vegetables and fruits than we can sell to wholesalers for the Divisoria and Baguio markets," the governor added.
A slump in restaurant sales during the holidays has caused prices of vegetables and fruits from Baguio and the Cordilleras to drop by as much as 50 percent and caused a glut in supplies.
