Lupao, Nueva Ecija, Jan. 10, 1998 - Mayor Alfredo Vendavil yesterday survived an attack by five unidentified armed men during a wedding party at Barangay Balbalungao. However, his police bodyguard was killed.
The gunmen fled with the bodyguard's M-16 armalite rifle and his .38 caliber service pistol.
Police probers suspect that the attack was the work of either the communist New People's Army or of political enemies of the mayor.
But Mayor Vendavil discounted the NPA theory, because the house where the attack happened was the residence of Dionisio Malapit alias Ka Edong, one of eight communist rebels killed by police last year in San Jose City.
A source said the NPA would never attack the home of one of their comrades.
