Manila, Jan. 5, 1998 - The Department of Science and Technology has directed the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to "keep a close watch" on Mount Arayat in Pampanga.
DOST Secretary William Padolina said he directed Phivolcs Director Raymundo Punongbayan to "monitor any abnormal activity in the mountain, to check if there is any abnormality triggered by the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo."
Padolina noted that the government cannot afford to be complacent in watching Mount Arayat. He cited how the eruption of Pinatubo in 1991, after six centuries of inactivity, caught everyone by surprise.
