Cebu City, Jan. 5, 1997 - The two-storey fruit and grains building of Cebu City's main Carbon market was almost completely destroyed by fire last Friday night.
No one was reported injured, but the fire closed all 400 stalls in the market area and suspended wholesale transactions in fruits, vegetables, rice, snack food and corn.
Market vendors reported hearing two loud explosions from the second floor of the building, followed by the fast spread of the flames.
The burned complex is located at the back of the old power plant of the Visayan Electric Company (Veco).
