Kalibo, Aklan, Jan. 3, 1998 - Hundreds of families became homeless New Year's Day when fire razed 150 houses occupying a one-hectare block on Toting Reyes Street yesterday.
Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, which hit the area known popularly as the Salazar Compound.
There were reports that the fire started at the Lucky Star Bakery inside the residential block.
Fire trucks from the neighboring towns of New Washington, Numancia and Ibajay helped put out the blaze, which caused an estimated P15 million in losses.
Victims were immediately assisted by provincial and municipal officials and media groups who set up relief centers within the Salazar Compound.
