Barobo, Surigao del Sur, Jan. 3, 1998 - Thirty nine persons were hospitalized after eating shellfish gathered from red tide-infected Barobo Bay.
The Department of Health had earlier banned the gathering and sale of shellfish from the coastal waters of Gamut, Rizal, Anonang and Unidad after tests showed high levels of the red tide toxin on shellfsih samples from the area.
Manuel, Zanorio, chief of the Regional Fisheries Diagnostic Laboratory Unit has issued a warning to residents of other coastal towns and barangays to await results of tests on shellfish from their waters before gathering, selling or eating any.
