Cotabato City, Jan. 14, 1998 - The Philippine Coconut Authority wants to use 110,000 hectares of government-owned land in Mindanao for palm oil production, in joint ventures with foreign and local investors.
Industry analysts believe that Philippine production of palm oil can reach 800,000 Metric Tons from the present 60,000 metric tons should the Mindanao project be developed.
A study by the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia showed the provinces of Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte, Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat are suitable for palm oil cultivation and production.
The proposed plantation has been inspected by representatives from Malaysia's Ministry of Primary Industries and by private German investors.
