CAGAYAN DE ORO LURE: WHALE SHARK WATCHING
Cagayan de Oro City, Dec. 29, 1997 - Misamis Oriental is now preparing for the arrival of eco- tourists who are expected to fly in from many parts of the world for a glimpse of whales, manta rays, dolphins and whale sharks.
This unique tourist attraction reaches its peak in January, when seasonal migration causes these endangered animals to converge in the waters between Camiguin Island and Misamis Oriental.
To preserve the transient whale shark, dolphin and whale population, the Department of Tourism Region 10 office has created the Mindanao Marine Wildlife Watch.
The DOT is working hand-in-hand with the 40-member Whale Shark Spotters Association of the Philippines, a group composed of fishermen who used to hunt whale sharks for food.
The group is hoping that Congress will pass a bill to declare as illegal the catching of whale sharks, whales, dolphins and other endangered ocean animals.
