PINATUBO AS TOURIST DESTINATION
Clark Field, Dec. 25, 1997 - Filipino and foreign travellers who are curious about Mount Pinatubo will soon have a choice of three strategically-located viewing decks that will give them panoramic views of the volcano and the lahar-covered scenario resulting from its 1991 eruption.
Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor revealed after a Misa de Gallo mass here that her office is preparing a master plan to make Mount Pinatubo a major tourist destination
The viewing decks, Gabor said, will be equipped with powerful telescopes, comfort rooms, restaurants and other amenities. Tarlac, Zambales and Pampanga will each have one viewing deck. Indigenous communities displaced by the volcanic eruption will be encouraged to sell their handcrafted wares to tourists in special souvenir shops within the decks.
The master plan which will be released early next year also includes the construction of cable cars which will give tourists an aerial view of the lahar-covered slopes.
The Pinatubo master tourism plan also has accommodations for backpackers, hikers and eco-tourists who may want to venture or take a dip in the volcano's crater lake.
