MORE DIRECT HK-SUBIC FLIGHTS
Subic Bay Freeport, Dec. 21, 1997 - Hong Kong's second largest airline began this week direct flights between Hong Kong and Subic, bringing to 21 the number of weekly international charters to the former US Navy facility.
Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chairman Richard Gordon welcomed the inaugural flight of Dragonair, noting that more tourists flying into the country would help a lot in the currency crisis. Tourism, he said, draws in dollars, creates jobs and increases exports.
Foreign tourist arrivals in Subic reached 78,945 in the first ten months of 1997, an increase of 81.76% over the 43,433 tourists registered for the same period in 1996.
Dragonair CEO Stanley Hui said his airline will start regular thrice-weekly flights between Hong Kong and Subic, using Airbus 320 aircraft with 150-passenger capacity.
Gordon said that Dragonair is the latest in the growing list of international airlines flying in and out of Subic, which already includes: Saeaga Airlines, Japan Air Systems, China Airlines, Asia Air, Far Eastern Air Transport, Grand Air and Great China Airlines.
Subic is now accessible via direct flights from Japan, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Taiwan.
