TWO MILLION JOBS FROM TOURISM
Manila, Dec. 9, 1997 - The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) says Philippine tourism now accounts for two to three million jobs or 9% of the national labor force.
The WTTC study also said that in the Asia-Pacific region, tourism generates 11 percent of regional employment and provides livelihood for 173 million people. Globally, it employs one in every nine, or a total of 262 million workers, representing 11% of the world's work force.
Today, the Philippines grosses $8 billion from tourism, and is expected to raise annual tourism earnings to $23 billion by the next decade.
This year, tourism accounts for 9% of the Gross Domestic Product (GNP) at P218 billion, slightly lower than the average in Asia of 10.5% and global average of 10.7 percent.
Currently, tourism is attracting international investors into the Philippines.
