GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL AT PASKUHAN VILLAGE
San Fernando, Pampanga, Dec. 7, 1997 - Residents of 10 barangays in this Lantern Capital of the Philippines are busy from sunup to sundown preparing colossal lanterns for the world-renowned Giant Lantern Festival to be held December 20 at the Paskuhan Village.
Mayor Reynaldo Aquino said village chiefs have agreed to make their lanterns no smaller than 18 feet in diameter. Each lantern will use more than 3,500 bulbs to create the colorful blinking patterns.
Mayor Aquino gave each barangay P70,000 as the municipal government's subsidy for the community's entry. The participating villages are Dolores, Del Pilar, De La Paz Norte, San Felipe, Sta. Lucia, San Jose, San Juan, San Nicolas, San Pedro and Sto. Rosario.
Thousands of local and foreign tourists are expected to flock to San Fernando on December 20 for the annual "Parade of Giant Lanterns" which is not done anywhere else in the country.
