P300-M FOR DAVAO AIRPORT UPGRADE
Davao City, Dec. 3, 1997 - More than 800,000 passengers came through the Davao City airport in the first ten months of 1997, a 34% increase over last year's figures.
The jump in the number of travellers going through Davao has prompted the government to speed up construction of a new terminal building. The growing frequency of domestic and international airlines servicing the region also means an extension of the runway to accommodate bigger and more state-of-the-art aircraft.
The Department of Transportation and Communication has released a total of P300 million to the Davao City government to cover expenses for the acquisition of subdivision lots necessary for the runway extension.
The Davao International Airport Development Project aims to upgrade the existing airport to Category 1 of the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Upgrading will include extending the runway by 500 meters and constructing a new terminal building with a parking apron that can accommodate seven aircraft at one time.
