P60-M FOR NATIONAL EQUINE CENTER
College, Laguna, Dec. 31, 1997 - The Philippine horse racing industry, still reeling from P500- million in losses, will be the main beneficiary of a National Equine Center planned by the University of the Philippines College of Veterinary Medicine.
A horse epidemic which hit the Sta. Ana and San Lazaro race tracks killed at least 30 race horses before it was placed under control. Suspension, delay and cancellation of weekly and special races has meant hundreds of millions lost, in addition to the price of the thoroughbreds killed by the disease.
Department of Agriculture Secretary Salvador Escudero III has provided initial seed funds of P3.5 million for the purchase of equipment. The Philippine Racing Commission is one of the expected sponsors of the P60-million center, which will be built within UP facilities in Barangay Maahas, Los Banos.
