AMY, SHARMAINE REFUSE LESBIAN ROLE
Manila, Dec. 31, 1997 - The movie "Tatlo" promises to be a big hit, both with critics as in the box office, for many reasons.
First, it is produced by the very prestigious Reyna Films of Armida Siguion-Reyna, known for quality movies.
Second, it is directed by award-winning Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, Armida's super-talented, US- trained son.
Third, it is based on a screenplay by Bibeth Orteza, otherwise known as Mrs. Carlos Siguion- Reyna, multi-talented actress, comedienne, writer, playwright.
So who in their right minds would turn down the chance to star in the movie? Amy Austria and Sharmaine Arnaiz, that's who.
The role of a lesbian lover (opposite Ara Mina) was first offered to Amy Austria, who immediately declined. It was then proposed to Sharmaine, who initially read the script, but returned it later with a polite no.
The news is out that Rita Avila (star of Machete, remember?) accepted the controversial role, which calls for more than a tame kissing scene with Ara Mina. The explosive love scene between two women, yet to be filmed, is expected to be the object of censorship when the movie is finally finished.
Amy and Sharmaine both feel the role is contrary to their religious beliefs.
