TOURISM REVENUES TO REACH P2.5 BILLION
Manila, Nov. 23, 1997 - An estimated 2.5 million tourists will contribute P2.5 billion to the Philippine economy before the year is over.
This was announced by Tourism Undersecretary Macabangkit Lanto, who discussed the enormous economic potential of travel and tourism as a major dollar earner for the country at a recent media forum.
Lanto was guest of the Newsmakers Breakfast Forum at the Hotel Sofitel Grand Boulevard (formerly the Silahis Hotel), which tackled the role of tourism in the country's development.
According to Lanto, the dramatic growth of tourist arrivals is reflective of the relative socio-economic and political stability currently enjoyed by the Philippines.
"The viability and sustained growth of the tourism industry is borne out of President Ramos' vision to build world class hotels and airports throughout the countryside in order to attract more tourists to our shores," Lanto said.
